Sunwarrior Partners with Croix Sather to Take on a World Record

Sunwarrior is proud to partner with Croix Sather as he again takes on Death Valley and Mt. Whitney with a monumental trek from the lowest point in the continental United States to the highest just days after gastrointestinal distress sent him back to the start. This “Solo Self-contained Crossing” Ultramarathon will carry him 146 miles in 3 days with 25,000 feet of ups and downs along the way. There are no aid stations or water stops; Croix must push his own food, water, and supplies, weighing over 250 pounds, as he races toward breaking a world record. His first attempt began Sunday, August 19, but he was forced to turn back around mile 45 after being unable to keep any food or water down.

This record was set in 1999 by racing legend Marshal Ulrich when he completed the Badwater SSC in 77 hours and 46 minutes, pulling and pushing his rickshaw-like cart the distance. Ulrich is one of only two people to ever complete the challenge out of the six who have now attempted to do so. Lisa Bliss is the first woman and only other finisher, completing the run in 89 hours and 39 minutes.

“We’ve been excited to partner with Croix on this challenge,” said Nick Stern, cofounder of Sunwarrior. “We were cheering for him on Sunday and Monday as we watched his progress online and we’ll be cheering him on and supporting him in spirit as he begins again on Thursday. Though this is something he’ll have to do completely on his own, he has a lot of people rooting for him.”

On August 23, 2012 Croix Sather will once again challenge the 13 year-old record in temperatures that can reach 129 degrees and pavement that can top 180 degrees. Croix is a relative newcomer to the ultra-running scene who could only be called a casual runner less than three years ago. Inspired by the ultra-distance runner Stu Mittleman, Croix, at 40, strapped on his running shoes and took on the 2,621 miles between California and New York. It took him 100 days, running the equivalent of a marathon each day, as he inspired thousands of people with his determination and endurance. Now he’s set his sights on something shorter, but far more challenging.

“We hope he can beat the world record,” said Stern, “but even if he doesn’t surpass Ulrich’s time, he will still be one of three human beings to complete this grueling race and we couldn’t be more proud to have him associated with Sunwarrior. I can’t even imagine how difficult it would be to take on this trek after running a third of it without food just a couple days earlier. Croix is a true warrior to get up after things didn’t go as planned and go after this challenge again. His determination is beyond admirable.”

Croix Sather is always inspirational. “Success is the only option,” said Sather. “This isn’t about breaking a record. It’s about never giving up. It’s about living life full-out and living up to my potential. Dream so BIG it inspires you, Act so BIG it inspires the World!”
