Coconut oil has a bit of a craze surrounding it lately. People have put together hundreds of different uses for this beneficial oil and it’s found its way into pantries, medicine cupboards, and even first aid kits. Some of the uses may seem bizarre at first, but coconut oil has garnered this newfound fame for good reason. It works.

For years, coconut oil has had a bad name, lumped in with unhealthy saturated fats. People steered away from it and other high fat foods. The problem with throwing coconut oil in the same category as butter, margarine, and shortening is this oil is far healthier than it appears. The saturated fats in coconut oil come from medium chain triglycerides. These shorter fat chains are easily put to use by the body and are not simply stored away as fat.

This means coconut oil boosts energy levels, raises good cholesterol, and balances out blood sugar without the weight gain, cholesterol, and other health risks that come from other saturated or trans fats.   • Would coconut oil help with sebacaous cysts on the scalp, and sebaceous hyperplasia on the face? Or would something else be better? There's no point going to the Dr about them, they see them as only a cosmetic problem.

  • Will coconut oil and water just reduce the symptoms of a UTI or actually cure me?
    How will I know if Im cured?

      Coconut oil, water, garlic, ginger, and turmeric can all help with your UTI, but curing one really depends on how extensive the infection has become. You also need to keep up the natural remedies or the medication for a while after symptoms stop to keep it from coming back.

    • Stick a probiotic (RAW Probiotics Ultimate Care) up there to increase good flora environment. It will knock it out over night, but if it is really bad, then study's have had women use it for 6 days (doubt you would need to for that long if you don't have BV). Use a drop of Tea Tree with your coconut oil during unprotected sex and then shove a 500 mg caplet of vitamin C (nature made) up there over night after each time you have sex to increase the acidity. Works for me :-)

  • I have been using CO for probably over 10 yrs...cooking, right of tsp, in coffee, make my own TP, swish a bit but not totally oil pulling. Unbelievable great stuff...first learned indepth about it via Weston Price chapter here in our town.

    I have not gone to dentist in about 5 some yrs and no dental work done for at least 10 yrs since CO takes care of my oral health so much. OPC's do too....love both these natural healers.

  • Hi, very helpful article!! I didn't see this issue on the list, but I ingest it (last 3 weeks or so) coconut oil a couple times a day. I definitely feel it helping my digestive tract, but I've been told it helps with cellulite, is that true?? Any other remedies you know of to combat these dimples (not the cute ones :)

      Probably could be helpful, Robin, as coconut oil can reduce inflammation. I've heard of people combining coconut and tea tree oil to help reduce the swelling of polyps. I'd also look at ginger and turmeric to use to reduce internal swelling and fight allergies. Good luck!

  • I'm 18 and black. I have dark spots on my face and I have tried different remedies to help get rid of them. Can coconut oil help get rid of those dark spots on my face?

      Coconut oil may help, Lucy, but it really depends on your skin and what has caused the dark spots. Lemon juice may help too, but you may want to dilute it if your skin is sensitive. You can also put potato slices on the dark spots for a few minutes and then rinse it off. Doing it once or twice a day. Good luck!

      Yes, Elizabeth, you can definitely mix the two. Take two to three tablespoons of coconut oil and mix in the juice of half a lemon. Rub it in and let it sit for about 15 minutes and then rinse it off with soap and water. You don't want to do it too long as the lemon juice can make your skin overly sensitive. The coconut oil should help minimize this, so you are on to something by combining them. :)

      Stephany, most allergies to food now days are actually caused by the sprays and/or the ways they are grown, not the actual product its self. you might want to look into that with your coconut allergy. A lot of things advertised organic only meet the minimum qualifications to be qualified as organic, but actually are not organic or free of poisonous sprays. I wonder if there's a way you could find a product that is of a more pure quality if that would help and combining that with Charlie Pulsipher's advice, there might be hope for you with coconuts yet.

      Sorry, Stephany. Food allergies can come on suddenly. There's some interesting research being done on reducing food allergies by taking extremely tiny doses and slowly increasing the amount or by taking certain probiotics that seem to turn off the immune response to foods, but it's too soon to tell if these are definite cures and nothing is available commercially yet.   • I use it in food, on food, eat it by the teaspoonful, use it to condition my hair and as a lip balm and after shower/bath skin softener. When i was a young child we lived in Africa and there was no such thing as sun tan lotion. We were only allowed out to play in the sun before 11am and after 3pm and we were smothered in coconut oil when out in it. Not once did we burn. Today i skinned my finger with a grater (a small cut but it bled a lot) and tonight once the bleeding had stopped i rubbed some coconut oil on it. The cut is now 'sealed' (even on a hot evening) and a lot less tender :) Regarding dogs mine get a heaped teaspoon every other day. They eat a raw food diet and will go for the coconut oil before the meat every time. None of them have had fleas so far this year (one of my dogs is very allergic to flea bites) which is a first! One of them had a bald spot appear recently so i wiped the coconut oil directly onto the patch and within a week fur was growing again. On the basis of that result i sent some to a rescue that was dealing with 2 dogs who'd had mange and who had very tight itchy skin and were bald after being treated for it. They wiped them over externally and gave them a spoonful a day with food. Again within 7-10 days fur was growing back and the itching had stopped. I think it's wonderful stuff :)

  • I'm 36 and still have horrible skin ... Oily with bad acne flare ups, along with blackheads. To boost the effects of coconut oil on my face, I trim the tips from my thyme plant, mix it in with the coconut oil and let it 'steep' for several days tightly covered. I apply this to my face every night for about 15 minutes and rinse off. The benefits of the two combined together are absolutely astounding!! It's not just for facial acne either.

    Love your tips!!! I tried coconut oil pulling for a week and then woke up with pain and swelling in the roof of the mouth by my front teeth as well as on the front of my gums. I stopped pulling and gargled with salt water for a few days which helped but it's still senstive a week later when I rub my tongue on the area!

    Could it be that I wasn't pulling first thing in the morning or brushing my teeth beforehand? Any ideas why this happened? I've never had gum issues and I'm worried to try pulling again. Appreciate your feedback and keep up the great work :)

      Thank you, Rachelle! There are many reasons why you could have had this reaction. You may be slightly allergic to coconut oil and may need to try a different oil. You could have had a detox reaction with the coconut oil. That's when you kill a large amount of bacteria that then release toxins as they die. That could easily have caused inflammation and pain. Your mouth could be unused to the friction of swishing something around for that long. Those are my best guesses. I hope you can figure out the cause.

  • I never tire of telling people that I've improved the headache that had frequently. consumption in coconut oil and coconut cream.
    I add cream to soups, beverages like coffee and juices.

  • I have been using coconut oil for 10 years. Its most certainly a super good. It kills candida.
    and my dog gets it in here food 2 times a day, she is 7 years old, the vet did blood work and says she is very healthy. Coconut oil is like duck tape for a household, no home shoulder be without it!

      I can tell you what worked for me, Rebecca. I used coconut oil and tea tree oil on it in the morning and evening every day. I kept it up for four or five days after it disappeared too, just to make sure it was truly gone. As long as it is virgin organic coconut oil, I don't think it matters much.

      I have been putting it on my body faithfully, so far. It seems that I have caught poison ivy on top of it. So my body is covered with a rash of ringworm and some type of poison plant. Unless ringworm can get so bad that it looks like a rash. I am also ingesting Virgin.Coc.Oil twice a day. I am determined not to pay the Doc a visit. I have the mindset that " I can heal this myself!"
      However,I don't have tea tree oil. Do you think just the C.O. will do?

      Always welcome, Rebecca. It should help with the itch and inflammation of poison ivy too. Coconut oil slowly kills the fungi that cause ringworm even without tea tree oil. It may take a little longer, but it should still work. Other essential oils help too if you have any. Oregano, rosemary, lemon, clary sage, lavender, or thyme work well. Clove and cinnamon work too, but can be more irritating to the skin for some people.

  • I've heard coconut oil is also showing promise in fighting "senior moments" and althemerz (sp). I take it regularly and noticed this year I don't have some of the small little fungus skin rashes I get at start of Spring/Summer. Can't say for sure the oil is reason, but it would make sense.

      You apply a couple spoonfuls to their coat and rub it in well and them put them in a sweater so the oil stays in place, they don't lick it all off, or get it on the furniture. You do that every day for about a week and the fleas should be gone.

  • Hi just read that coconut oil is beneficial for pets, really interested in this as my dog is 15 and has joint problems and i have a cat with calici virus (very sore mouth), she has had all her teeth removed and has to have antibiotic injections every month, could coconut oil help them and if so what do i do with it, thanku x

      I give my dog a little spoonful every day with his meal. He goes for the coconut oil first. It has helped him with ear infections and joint pain. He was a hopper as puppy and he's feeling now in his middle age. I hope it helps your cute pets feel better too.

  • I've been using organic, extra virgin coconut oil to cook with for years now, Yet, I now have seborreah on my face and scalp and the salve and soap, (sulfer based) that the dermatologist has prescribed is very drying. She said it's typically a yeast like fungus that causes it, (but not always), so I tried coconut oil on it and it didn't help. Just wondering if anyone else has found a way to treat this condition.       Your infection may have built up a resistance to the coconut oil. I have had luck against fungal infections by combining coconut oil and tea tree oil, but there is no guarantee that it will work in your case. I hope something does work for you, Arlene.

  • Does this actually work for athlete's foot/ringworm/fungal infections? I have some sort of infection on my arms that has spread to my shoulders, chest, neck, backk, and now my face. It's not something you can see unless you get close. I keep using Lotramine on it, and it keeps it under control, but it never goes away, and if I stop using it for a day or two, the infection makes a comeback. Has anyone been able to cure a fungal infection using coconut oil? I would like to know if it worked well. Always have some around for oil pulling, and if I can get rid of this junk, please tell me! I don't want to pass it to my kiddos!

      I've used it successfully on both ringworm and athlete's foot. I combine it with another antifungal though, like tea tree, clove, or oregano oil. Just a few drops of one or more of those in a handful of coconut oil and massage it in. I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me, Amanda. Good luck!

      The ringworm took a few weeks to fully go away. I kept it up for a few days even after any sign of it was gone. The athletes took just about three days to clear up. I also kept applying my blend of coconut oil and tea tree oil for a few more days. I think it depends on the severity and the fungus you are trying to get rid off. Good luck again, Amanda.

      Not to mention this infection makes it impossible for my skin to shed, so I have acne bad on my face, arms and back. Yuck.

      I just eat it in solid form. Some people can't handle that, but I like the flavor and texture just fine. You can melt it and drizzle it into smoothie or tea. I doubt it would work well in a juice. You can also find capsules of coconut oil if you do not like eating it.

    Healthy Fudge
    1 cup organic coconut oil (melted/liquid)
    1/4 cup organic raw cacao powder
    1/4 cup organic almond butter
    1/8 cup organic maple syrup
    1 tablespoon organic vanilla extract

    1) Put all ingredients in a medium sized bowl and stir until well combined.
    2) Pour into a 5 x 9 glass bread pan (for thicker pieces) or an 8 x 8 glass baking dish (for thinner pieces and more servings).
    3) Put in freezer for approximately 1 hour or until hard and firm. (before cutting into squares, take out of freezer, leave at room temp for at least and hour, and *then* cut into squares, and put back in freezer.
    4) Keep in freezer or refrigerator until ready to serve because the squares will become soft and lose their shape, if left out at room temperature.

      Wow, eclare, this sounds delicious! It is pretty high in fat and sugar, so it isn't the healthiest recipe in the world, but it would be good for you in small doses. I think a little square a day would be an excellent way to get some healthy fats, boost endorphins, and decrease inflammation.

  • Half of this information is false! I promise you! I work at a daycare and I just got over pink eye AND ringworm. I was using coconut oil to moisturize both areas before, after and during the time when I had them and it has done/is doing nothing to prevent them or make them go away faster. Furthermore, you cannot prove it has SPF 4 or any SPF without a proper test and nobody here knows if you're referring to organic or inorganic or organic unrefined or organic unrefined, etc. It may have antifungal, antibacterial properties, but it is not meant to treat medical issues. Please seek out a healthcare professional if you want to rid yourself of any bodily irritations.

      Thank you, Bailey. I love people who don't always agree with me. I do recommend people always consult a healthcare professional. I thought I was pretty clear that I prefer unrefined, virgin, organic over anything else. The SPF 4 is an average and, admittedly, is not a lot of protection no matter what. I haven't tried it on pink eye, but I have had very good luck using it combined with tea tree oil for ringworm and athletes foot. Everyone reacts differently though and there is always the placebo effect. Thank you again.

    • Totally false. Coconut oil will not only not protect you from sunburn but it will accelerate damage caused by the sun. I tried it and was out for only a short period of time and that night I had a terrible burn as tho I was out unprotected all day

      Like I said, not a lot of protection in 4 SPF, only a couple minutes. If you want a natural sunscreen, red raspberry oil or carrot oil is far better than coconut oil.

      It definitely keeps longer if you refrigerate it, Betty, but I've gone a couple years now keeping it in my cupboard without incident. It all depends on how fast you use it and how careful you are not to introduce anything into it. Always use a clean, dry spoon and you don't normally have issues.

  • I remember when I first tried the "coconut oil gets rid of acne! Just apply the OIL to your face!!" Yeah. No. I broke out horribly, after all, I was putting OIL on my face. A very very small amount I might add. Also I use it in my hair but it doesn't magically cause it to grow. It conditions the hair & helps prevent breakage. I do use it for razor bumps though & it works wonderfully.

      I always caution people when they use it on their faces, Stacy, as each one reacts differently to it. Our skin produces oils naturally to clean, hydrate, protect, and remove waste. That oil can unclog pores or clog them, depending on what else is in it, how our skin cells react, and what the bacteria that live on our skin do. Oil on your face can be a very good thing, but it can definitely cause also more breakouts. I mix it with tea tree oil, dab it on acne, and wipe it off with a cotton pad. That works for me, but may not for others. Thank you for sharing where it does and doesn't work for you.

      Usually you should start to see some difference by now, Vickie. For warts you want the oil to soak in and not rub off. Most people have more success if you apply the oil and then cover over it with a band-aid or a little piece of duct tape. Age spots take a lot of time and may need the help of something more, like lemon juice or yogurt. Moles are hard to get rid of without dealing them a little damage. Apple cider vinegar is a popular natural treatment as it seems to eat away at the mole, but almost any method of mole removal leaves a bit of a scar.

  • I love coconut oil. Been using it for years in food. But just recently I read a lot of health benefits of applying it to the exterior of the body as well. For the past 12 years I have bin suffering from eczema under my eyes and on the sides of my head (eczema is what the docs said it was). For years the doc. Has prescribed me a steroid cream to put on the reddish, flakey, itchy area. This application helped to get rid of this irritation but only for a few days, then it would come right back again. Usually after showering I apply Vaseline intensive rescue on my face and the rest of me as a moisturizer. (I actually might be having a reaction from this cream, not sure). Coconut oil has cleared this outbreak so perfectly its amazing. Every week for the past 12 years ive bin suffering with this reaction. But now ive used just 100% organic coconut oil as a moisturizer and its GONE!! ive bin absolutely clean from any reaction since I started applying it, and threw the Vaseline in the garbage.

      Coconut oil has some powerful antiviral properties and does a very good job of clearing up many skin irritations caused by them, Lexi. You can combine it with tea tree oil and/or clove oil for even more effect. Simply add a couple drops of each to a small spoonful of coconut oil and rub into the affected area a couple times a day.       Coconut oil keeps for at least two years at room temperature. Sometime longer. It does eventually go bad, but that takes a very long time for coconut oil. You want a good virgin coconut oil. The price range depends on the brand, the container, and how virgin it is. Less expensive isn't necessarily bad, but I like the ones in glass containers myself.

  • I loved the article, and have a suggestion. Coconut oil can be used as a lubricant, but it can compromise the integrity of a condom, which is why most lubricants are not oil based. Might be a good caveat to add to this suggestion, so that you don't have folks coming back to you pregnant, when they didn't want to be ;)

  • We live by a simple rule. If you wouldn't put it in your mouth, don't rub it into your skin! Everything rubbed into your skin will end up in your blood stream. So no commercial hand creams or antibacterial sanitizer in our house! I make my own hand cream from coconut oil, a little bees wax and water from our well. (No fluoride or city additives). A few drops of lavender and oregano oil, as well as vitamin E oil and its the perfect all in one natural body/hand cream!

  • I LOVE Coconut OIl and its many uses, and have been using it for quite some time in the various ways already mentioned. In cooking, my favorite is for frying French Toast. You know how the bread soaks up the oil as it fries?? and it is so good tasting fried in coconut oil!

      Most people start small and see how your skin tolerates it. If you don't have an allergic reaction (coconut allergies are rare), then widen the area. You need a couple weeks for your skin to adjust to the new levels of hydration. On your face, you want to go thin. I use a cotton pad to wipe it on and then another to wipe it off or I use it before a shower so only the thinnest layer is left when I towel off. You can go thicker on other parts of the body.   • I use my Kitchen Aide stand mixer to whip my coconut oil into a creamy "body butter". It's a much nicer consistency to apply externally (especially in the cold winter). I mix an entire container (hardened) for about 5 minutes and place it back in the original container.

      Of course you'll want to work with your doctor, Julie, but I can tell you what's worked for my friend and coworker. She started adding it to smoothies each day and using it in place of her cooking oils. That is pretty much all she did and it has helped her tremendously. She's probably only getting about one to two tablespoons a day. Start small and see how it goes.

      Pretty much you want to make an exfoliating paste, Therese, and the recipe doesn't have to be exact. I put a small spoonful of coconut oil in my hand, let it melt, and then spoon in the other ingredients (about 1 teaspoon at a time) until I have a good paste. With oatmeal, you'll have to start with a little more coconut oil. You can use only one other ingredient at a time or combine them in different ways. I mainly stick to coconut oil and baking soda.

      It may not be as effective, but it will still have some benefits. Many people like cooking with the refined oils as they have less coconut taste. Use the jar you have up through all the uses you can think of and then replace it with a virgin variety when you run out.

      I have heard of people using coconut oil, tea tree oil, or a combination of the two to remove skin tags. There are other natural cures too. Apple cider vinegar is one. Tying them off with string or dental floss is another. I've even heard of using a small piece of duct tape over the tag. I haven't tried these yet. I only have one and it is in a place where it doesn't bug me much. Maybe I'll experiment on it and see.

  • I'm a massage thetapist at a great spa in NY. I use coconut oil mixed about 50/50 with organic sacred earth cream on the body. One super special tecnique I've developed is for the feet - if you have calluses do this before using ped egg on tildes hard spots...

    Slather about 1 tbsp of mixture onto feet
    Wrap in hot damp towels (you can microwave damp hand towels-make sure theyre not too hot- 2-3 mins is good
    Wrap feet in thick dry bath towel to keep heat and moisture in
    Leave on for 5-10 mins or untill starts cooling down
    Remove towels and massage feet
    They will be baby smooth and perfect to remove the hard skin with ped egg or lava stone or whatever you like and that works for you.

    I make cosmetics (http://www.conscious-cosmetics.com), and use virgin coconut oil in a quite few of my product (Fountain of Youth Cream, Baby Barrier Cream, Semi-Perspirant, Eye Cream, Facial Cleanser, Facial Sugar Exfoliator) and can attest to the absolute wonderful qualities and properties of the oil. Through endless experimentation I have found that most ingredients, even though they hold beautiful properties in their own right, need complementary and balancing ingredients to get the full job done. For instance, YES Coconut Oil is a great moisturizer for the lips, but is absorbed very quickly, thus needs to be applied constantly if used on its own, and works much better and is very long lasting when combined with a wax, plant butter, and a plant based liquid oil. I guess what I am trying to say is to adjust expectations when only using coconut oil for some of the above suggestions, as well as look for other ingredients to combine coconut oil with, to obtain the results that you are looking for ♥

      There are capsules available for people who can't take it straight. It will also work very well in smoothies, tea, and coffee. For weight loss, go easy on it. Coconut oil does seem to help lose inches around the waist and give metabolism a boost, but it is also high in calories. Good luck.

  • I'm surprise that Oil Pulling was on the list. It's basically using the oil as an oral rinse(think replacing Listerine with it).

    The oil gets into to spaces around the teeth, cracks and fissures in the teeth, around and under the gum line, and flushing the bacteria out. The go to prescription for gingivitis is Chlorhexedine, which is an oral rinse used to kill off the bacteria on and under the gum line allowing the gums to repair themselves. Here's a study comparing the effects of both, finding that the Coconut Oil swishing is in fact effective at reducing not only the total number of bacteria but the localized "colonies" of them as well.

    As a side note, I've had gingivitis, and I've used the Chlorhexedrine... and it's is NASTY tasting. If you're got mild gum issues or just would like to increase your oral health regimen, I would strongly suggest the coconut oil as it's far more tasty. Assuming you like the taste of coconut...which I do :)

      Thank you, Jason. Plenty of people have brought up oil pulling in the comments. It is practically an honorary member of the list now. The only reason it didn't make it is because I tried to keep it at 50 even and trimmed a lot. I love oil pulling and coconut oil is the only way to go.

  • I was really curious where you got your information about coconut oil and lice removal. Every other aspect mentioned in this article makes a lot of sense to me, but having worked for a lice removal company, I have had experiences where people have self-treated with coconut oil and still have lice.

    Having said that, I am fairly certain that it would work as a from of prevention-although nothing is foolproof- as almost any essential oil or hair product can mask the scent of blood which the bugs are going after.

    I know this seems like a silly thing to nit-pick (pardon the pun) about, however lice is second only to the common cold in elementary school aged kids and younger, so I want to make sure the information people are spreading is as accurate as possible.

      It is pretty well known that oils can suffocate the little guys. My sister has also implemented it and had success. She slathered on the coconut oil, massaged it into scalp and hair, put on a shower cap, and let the kids sleep with it on over night. In the morning she used a nit comb to get all the dead lice and nits out. The oil made that process much easier than it was for me as a kid. She didn't have any more problems and she checked their heads each day for weeks.

      I simply give my little dog a spoonful each day, Sue. He seems to have fresher breath so far. I suppose you could occasionally mix a drop of peppermint oil in with the coconut oil too for extra fresh breath. I may have to try that one.

  • I use coconut oil to condition my veggie cutting board (I am vegan). Place a tablespoonful or so on a clean cutting board and rub it in with your fingers. Wipe off any excess with a paper towel, then use the oil-saturated paper towel to soften your hands or polish other kitchen surfaces and counter tops or dust and condition wood furniture. Coconut oil is fantastic! I use it on my skin and hair, too, for a wonderfully decadent and delicious smelling moisturizer. Massage it into your scalp and hair at night, then wash it off in the morning. Your hair will be silky soft and smooth.

      I have been oil pulling for almost a year. I began doing it after researching a natural way to help cure my bad gums. I had been doing what the dentist wanted me to do for quite a while & was still having bad problems-even had to have the deep pocket cleaning. I started oil pulling using sesame oil as that was what the website recommended (lots of info on www.oilpulling.com) I also stopped using commercial toothpaste and made my own. Several months later I went back to the dentist and she found that my pockets were much better. I told her what I was doing and she had a "Yeah, whatever" attitude about it. I kept doing what I was doing. A couple of months ago I read about coconut oil benefits and starting using it for oil pulling alternating with the sesame oil. I went back for a cleaning a couple of weeks ago and there were no deep pocket problems and only a few lightly bleeding areas and VERY little plaque (if OP would only cure a cracked tooth that needs a crown due to multiple old fillings weakening it I would have had a great visit). My dentist then asked lots of questions about oil pulling-maybe she will do research now & not be so pessimistic :). Since I started using the coconut oil my teeth have been whiter than with just sesame oil. I've played around with recipes but the most recent & my favorite toothpaste is coconut oil with a small amount of baking soda and a couple of drops of clove and sweet orange essential oil-just enough to taste. Yummy! I use coconut oil as a moisturizer also and am incorporating it into my diet & life more and more as I read about the benefits others are having from it.       You do want all natural, food grade essential oils if you are using them on or in your body. Check the ingredients and don't use any that rely on synthetics. You still need to use caution with even the pure essential oils. They can be quite strong and can be hard on your kidneys and liver. You only need a few drops to flavor an entire batch of toothpaste that will last you a month.

      I keep the salt & baking soda in a vial by the sink. To brush my teeth I smear the coconut oil on the brush, then pour a bit of the salt/baking soda mixture over it. works great!

      I kinda just eyeball it, Amanda. I've never been good at following recipes. I like to rock the boat. I start with coconut oil and then I add baking soda until it is a good paste. I drip in a few drops of peppermint oil and a dash of salt. Mix it up a little more and save it in a little glass jar in my bathroom. I oil pull a few times a week and I only brush once a day. I also don't brush for longer than a minute or so. Over brushing is bad for your teeth, very bad. Cavity free for over 15 years now!

    • I Used it on my face and in my Homade body lotion but I broke out in a horrible rash and each time I use the coconut oil it makes me itch horribly, so try a small area first few times to make sure you don't have any allergic reactions to it.i have no idea why it affects me like that.

  • I have a 13 year old 18 lb. dog that has crusty skin lesions. I have heard of giving coconut oil both orally and topically. I was just wondering how much internally. This is kind of a double question as I myself put a tablespoon in my smoothie for the first time and I went straight to the bathroom about 15 minutes later (if you know what I mean). So I didn't want to guess on dosage for a small dog and have him react the same. I keep hearing spoonfuls, but that could mean many things....1/4 teas. 1/2 teas and so on...So for both humans and dogs should this be a gradual increase until your body can tolerate a larger amount? And is this daily, weekly etc.??? I would really appreciate your response as no one seems to have an answer. THANK YOU!!!

      Start with half a teaspoon and work your way up to one tablespoon over the course of a week or two. I can give my dog a tablespoon without any repercussions. When he is sick, I can often give him one in the morning and one in the evening. Do the same for yourself. It isn't unusual for you to have a detox event early on, but those go away pretty fast.

    The first action of the immune system is the release of inflammation. If you boost the action of the immune system you run the risk of too much inflammation. Too much inflammation in the body has been linked to a plethora of health issues. Are you says that it balances the immune system? or helps the immune system function properly? If that is the case can you provide a place where I can find the research?

      What you say is true to a point, Max, but not the entirety of it. The immune system does use inflammation as one of it's first tools, but it is not the only tool at its disposal. There is gut bacteria, better circulation, improved lymphatic function, and specialized immune cells that do not rely on inflammation or even trigger inflammatory responses, yet are all a part of our immune system. Natural ingredients are also not one isolated chemical that does one thing. There are a whole host of phytonutrients in plant foods that can multitask. It is quite possible to release more immunoglobulin, thus circulating more antibodies, and lower inflammation at the same time. An example is mushrooms. According to this study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22113068 mushrooms trigger a release of antibodies. This would normally also increase inflammation, but this study http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308814611010107 shows that the same species has anti-inflammatory properties.       Probably okay, Janie. It may be refined and it may not be virgin though. Hard to tell without seeing the label. I'd use it up and look for virgin or extra virgin with your next purchase.

  • Having first used Tropical Traditions, now I am another consumer of the Nutiva brand sold at Costco. It is excellent and an excellent price! I have Hashimoto's and my hair is coarse, often dry and is long and thick. Every so often I melt a glass container of it on one of those coffee cup warmers people used to use on their office desks. Then I cover the floor with a doubled up old sheet (I'm messy) and I slather the liquid oil into my hair until saturated. I have a large "Turbie Twist" type of head towel I made and I cover my head either all day at home or wear it at night if hubby is on a business trip. Then I shampoo twice and condition. My hair is SO soft then!

    I don't use it much for cooking as I prefer butter, but I do use it with olive oil to saute up chicken cubes for making Asian type dishes. Mmm! Melted with chocolate chips it makes a great hard shell ice cream sauce. I've even melted it 1 part choc chips to 2 parts coconut oil and poured the mixture into mini muffin tins and chilled them. Out pops these great little candy bars that can be stored in a zippered plastic bag in the fridge or freezer. Especially good if made with bittersweet chocolate. I do make my preferred from scratch muffins with a mixture of coconut oil, vegetable oil and butter as my family doesn't like it with all coconut oil.

    I use it for shaving; also mixed with sugar/sea salt/magnesium oil for a body shower scrub, or plain to take off makeup. My teen uses it as hand lotion.

    It's a great product and I'm so glad I was introduced to it!

      Harriett... love all your uses. I have only been cooking with coconut oil and am excited o use it in more ways... especially for my hair. I too have Hashimoto's.

      As an aside unrelated to coconut oil and is uses.... Hashimoto's effects our immune systems. There has been found that a high amount of people who have it also have Wheat and Dairy sensitivity. There have also been a high correlation to women with breast cancer also having Hashimoto's.

      It is also a known fact that if you have an autoimmune issue, you have a greater chance of having other autoimmune conditions over time (due to a compromised immune system).

There will always be avid and enthusiastic supporters because they've experienced the benefits and want to share and there will always be the nay sayers and rabble rousers;). Most of us who can operate a device and access this site have free choice, a brain and the ability to exercise it whether someone else thinks our choice is good or not. As for me, I choose to use coconut oil:) Charlie, as for your painting, having a coating of almost any oil (especially previous to use--just a light layer so you can hold your brush:) will help immensely when it comes time to clean your hands. Which oil you use is your choice;))!!

  • I make the most delicious spread using 50% virgin coconut oil and 50% raw creamed honey. I use this on toast, muffins, mixed into hot oatmeal, on pancakes, etc. It stays good forever and unless its super hot out stays a nice spreadable texture at room temperature. If you like cinnamon you can mix 1/2 teaspoon into a batch (and use 1/4 cup creamed honey, 1/4 cup coconut). And if you have a cough or sore throat you can eat it straight off the spoon or mix into a cup of warm (but not boiling) water.

  • I have loved coconut oil for years. My boyfriend and I used it intimately for over a year and LOVED it ... but unfortunately, he had a significant increase in his genital herpes outbreaks during this time so he feels it is the major cause for this increase. It has lots of argenine and so now we don't use it this way and his outbreaks have stopped. He hasn't had another outbreak over several months now where he seemed to be breaking out every 2-3 weeks before. His diet has stayed the same (he does pay attention to his foods and argenine/lysine intake). Just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of reaction?

  • HI, was painting with melamine paint, and used gas to clean my hands. I couldnt get it all off and my hands were raw from scrubbing so I used coconut oil to soften my hands, and the coconut oil magically took off the rest of the paint.. So when I did the second coat, I simply used the oil, and it removed all traces of paint off my hands and the floor.. I love this stuff

  • this is an awesome article , thanks for all the great tips, I have used coconut for a lot of the tips mentioned above but there are so many I have not. after reading through this whole documents I have not come across anyone who orders or uses Mercola's coconut oil. I have been using his oil for about 8 yrs now. l love it, it has just a slight taste of coconut, and it is so smooth and tastes great, it doesn't have the rancid fatty taste that I have tasted in some others I have tried. I live in Alberta also, Med. Hat, and he has free shipping once you are a member for a bit . It is awesome as we all know , it seems shipping from the states to Canada is completely stupid in cost. I am wondering why it has not been mentioned.

  • Coconut oil will also pull toxins from your body. Warm a bit to a liquid state and swish it around in your mouth for a minute or more. Spit it out and brush your teeth to remove the toxins.

    I also like to add a small bit to my morning cup of coffee.

      I actually agree with you, Bob. I think oil pulling is great for the mouth, teeth, gums, throat, and even sinuses, especially coconut oil as it helps kill the bacteria and fungi that like to live in there while reducing inflammation. Pulling toxins from the blood is asking a little too much.

    1 - Did someone mention using this for hair loss? My hair is thinning in the front and I was curious if I can use this like a conditioner/hair treatment.

    2 - I've have large outbreaks of acne on my back and sometimes I agitate them, resulting in a nasty looking pockmarks and scars. Any chance of the oil helping those?

      Some people have had good luck with it strengthening hair and nourishing your scalp, Dustin. It is worth a try. I have also had good luck personally with rosemary oil. My widow's peaks have been climbing recently and I rub it in right along my hair line to keep it from continuing. Coconut oil does wonders with scars.

  • I was using coconut oil as a moisturizer. I had some ugly sunspots on my arms. After about two weeks they started to fade. I thought I was going nuts. So I looked it up and sure enough coconut oil gets rid of them. After about two months of nightly moisturizing I don't have an age or sunspot anywhere. It is hard to explain how it worked. It didn't fade them. It seemed to wear the skin down on these spots and helped heal them over with new skin. I heard a lot of good things about coconut oil but never this until I saw it with my own eyes and Googled it to see if this was due to the coconut oil.

      You want to massage it into your hair and scalp, cover it with a shower cap, and let it absorb in for anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours or even overnight. Just make sure you are wearing grubby clothes and cover you pillow with a towel you don't care about if you do. Coconut oil can drip and leave oil stains. When time is up, just wash your hair as usual and you should notice a big difference as you dry and style it. I do a couple hours myself every couple weeks while I watch tv or read a book.

    • I am over weight and I do sometimes get what can only be called diaper rash even though I do not wear diapers, it has to do with heat limited air exposure and rubbing. I have had extremely sensitive and reactive skin my whole life limiting my use of deodorants, perfumes, soaps and especially lotions and creams. I was worried coconut oil would be just as bad. I have very dry skin on my body (lack of lotion) and extremely oily skin on my face. I use the coconut oil on my rash and dry skin and while I have just started it seems to be doing a wonderful job eliminating rash and dry skin and even more impressive I did not have a reaction or break out at all which would have occured in the first few hours of use. I have now started using on razor burn too since I never found a lotion I could use successfully. Even hypoallergenic lotions can in some cases cause a break out though not a rash or hives. Thank you coconut oil.

  • I have made my own shower scrub with coconut oil and brown sugar and it is fabulous for my dry skin, but I feel when I get the oil on my face, it causes me to break out instead of potentially helping with acne. Because of this, I'm weary of having my teenage son use it on his face. Any suggestions or input?

      Sounds great, Jessi. It can have that effect on the face with some people. Try having him put just a small amount on a cotton cleansing pad and wiping it on with one side and wiping it off with the other. This will help clean out pores while leaving a minimal residue of the coconut oil behind. Have him try it for a few days and see how his skin reacts.

      I would go to any health food store near you and look for one that says "organic extra virgin" on the label, Marg. That is a good start. Each individual is different, but I can tell you my mother in law is doing better with one or two tablespoons a day. It isn't a cure, but she seems to be more lucid more often. I hope it helps you and your dad so very much. Dementia is such a difficult disease for everyone involved. My heart goes out to you.

    I have a question about coconut oil. I have tried to search for an answer and came
    up with nothing. If applying topically (as I do all the time, it's been great for dry skin!) since skin absorbs quite a bit of things from our environment, would it effect one internally just by applying it to skin? I am wondering if it absorbs like that through our skin or if it only absorbs bits and pieces, so to see any internal effect one would have to take it internally? I've also heard and read many contradictory statements about VCO being good or bad for high blood pressure. A lot of what I've seen has been that it reduces high blood pressure but then a few pieces have stated otherwise, so what do you think? Is there any scientific evidence it lowers (or perhaps raises) blood pressure? Thanks!

      Hi there, Kat. There will be some absorption through the skin, but not a huge amount. If you want internal benefits then you really have to eat it. Some people don't like the flavor, but using it in cooking takes care of that most of the time. Most of what I've seen has shown coconut oil to have a lowering effect on blood pressure. This study specifically showed it to help lower blood pressure. http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2013/629329/ But each person is unique. Pay attention to how it affects you and perhaps have your blood pressure tested a few times after you've had coconut oil to see what it does to your system.

  • I use coconut oil for cooking, eating, moisturizing my dry hair and skin (face too), make up removal, to brush my teeth and gums.

    I even put it in my eyes.

    My contacts are extended-wear lenses and I wear them longer than I should. When I remember to take them out my eyes need a lot of TLC.

    After removing my lenses with clean fingers and hands, I rinse them with commercial saline and store them in the container with fresh saline.

    Then I rinse my eyes with saline until they no longer feel dirty. Next I use a clean butter knife to put a few chunks of coconut oil in a small clean glass dish. (I keep my coconut oil in the fridge.)

    I go into the bathroom and use the wall mirror to carefully insert small pieces of coconut oil into each eye. It melts practically on contact, releasing a soothing coating onto my eyeballs.

    While it's melting, I blink profusely and tilt my head back a little so I can completely coat my eyeballs and the skin under the lids. Sometimes I add more coconut oil because the blood vessels under my lids feel swollen and the first application didn't do enough.

    It does NOT sting or hurt in any way but it does leave a film on my eyes. I only do it when I plan to wear my glasses for a day or so, to give all the oil time to absorb.

    I don't do it often, just when I remember and have the time. My eyes always feel and look 100% better when I'm done.

      As far as I know, there is no harm in taking coconut oil as a diabetic. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that it can help control insulin and blood sugar levels while reducing inflammatory responses. My brother, a diabetic, uses it and cinnamon every day. He believes it helps him.

  • Coconut oil to treat thrust in baby's mouth...any recommendations/suggestions/research on these? My grandson is 3 months old and is 100% breastfed using both mother's breast and bottle with breastmilk during the day and some nights due to mom working. He is being treated with traditional meds that the pediatrician prescribed.

      Well, Roselyne, you will want the coconut oil to be liquid when you make a salad dressing with it. It doesn't take much to melt it. I put it in a metal bowl and put it over a little steaming water for just a minute. I just combine it with olive oil 50/50. Then you do equal parts oil and vinegar (I like balsamic) with some Italian herbs and a dash of salt. Whisk it together and toss over your salad. You can use more oil than vinegar to make it less acidic and add more spices if you like.

      Hi, Maggie. So far, most of the correlations between coconut oil and the reduction of seizures is anecdotal, but this is beginning to change. Apparently coconut oil does a good job of creating ketones which have been linked to reduced intensity, length, and amount of seizures in those with epilepsy. We also know that coconut oil reduces inflammation which can occur throughout the body and the brain. It's also shown ability to improve other brain-related disorders, boosting cognitive function and memory.       Bonnie, sometimes a slavish reliance on the words of doctors keep us in the box of limited knowledge fed to them by the curriculum bought and paid for through the Big Pharmaceutical corporations.

      My son was diagnosed with Epilepsy by a pediatric neurology specialist. His seizures came on at twelve and I was told this would follow him his whole life as it wasn't childhood epilepsy. His neurologists (second opinion, different hospitals ) said his was the worst case of frequency they had seen. He spent more time in seizure than out, and had learned to maintain some function through his absence seizures. He was put on Neurontinfirst, which puffed him up in weight, causing obesity, poor guy, and keep him up all night, then we tried Depakote, no better. After a two year period of suffering, I made the decision to try it on our own. I weaned him off the med over a month and a half, while supplementing with ADD formula, by Buried Treasure, now called Added Attention maybe, which has GABA. Taurin, an amino acid that seizure meds are based on...and a low carb diet with coconut oil. No more seizures ever again. His doctors pitched a fit when they were informed in Jan...and I told them he had been without med since the October before. They demanded I bring him in for an overnight tudy which required fasting and sleep deprivation and flashing lights. They could not provoke a seizure. Only spiking. So, at 14, he was cleared. I asked them in their incredulity if they wanted to know what we did. Nope. Just keep it up. Come back if they seizures return. They haven't. He is 22, living normally with all the unhealthy ways a 22 yr old can. His brain needed these natural nutrients and it cured him. Sometimes, we have to realize that the medical community is only as good as the material they learn...and Big Pharma makes sure that the books say the cures are their products. (And I was a nurse) I don't recommend anyone get off their meds...but one may introduce these items and may find better control...or the need to take less meds or a cure, especially in those growing brains that heal so quickly.

      How do you get rid of a mole? I have 1 over my eyebrow that's hard. Its been there since I can remember. other between my eyes, and another beside my nose. Will coconut oil get rid of these or do I need to have them removed by a doctor?       I never recommend anyone stop taking medications or begin using a natural alternative without consulting their health care professional , Bonnie, especially when it concerns something as dangerous as seizures. That is insane. Having said that, I do actually know quite a bit about epilepsy and how it affects people. My best friend suffers from this condition, has a VNS, and uses herbs and coconut oil to minimize the effects of her seizures. I have been at her side during more seizures than I can count, from the smallest partial seizure to the scariest grand mal. Since she started adding coconut oil to her diet, I have watched them come less often and their severity decrease. This is still anecdotal as I mentioned above. I do recommend people try it as an addition to whatever steps they are already taking. The link is far from useless even if it is not complete. It shows a strong correlation between medium chain triglycerides and seizure control. Something worth thinking about and talking about with your doctor.

    • Charlie, the study that you cited actually involved a variation of a ketogenic diet not just taking coconut oil daily. The diet is complex and involves much more than just MCT consumption.

Something worth discussing with a doctor if you want to use nutrition to help control seizures. Adding more MCTs to your diet can be a good thing for anti-inflammation and the formation of ketone bodies.

    I had Shingles virus at the beginning of the year and keeping coconut oil on the area of the rash helped tremendously. It stings when you apply it, but helps in the long run! If you are unaware, the actual rash the virus causes is not the cause of the pain, it's the nerves around that area.

    I also put it in my oatmeal every morning and have had a much healthier immune system since!

  • I think this is great information and we are just opening our eyes to ways to improve the body naturally in the medical field. Unfortunately in medical school they do not teach this method so there will always be physicians that do not agree. Nothing you can do about that if a doctor will not look beyond his text book for an answer. Except find another doctor.
    I am in dermatology, my brother Phyciatrisit, and sister physician in internal medicine for the US Navy. You're right not alot of science because its still new and clinical studies cost money and are lengthy.
    We all agree coconut oil is great for the body. Yes Lin-z there will be science eventually and then maybe your hospital co-workers will approve but there are studies every day that prove traditional medicine is harmful to the body unfortunately years after its been prescribed.
    It's all about educating your self and its very disappointing that those physicians and dieticians would dismiss something with out thoroughly educating themselves on it.
    I guess for them it would be easier to just prescribe something to help the symptoms than to look for a cure. Maybe that kind of thinking is good for you but Americans should expect more from a physician than just a prescription and a quick uneducated answer. I'm curious to where this hospital and phycians are located.

      Joanna, I am a dietitian. I don't recommend coconut oil for the exact reason you mentioned. I have done my research and frankly there isn't enough evidence to support recommending it. There is a small amount of initial research. But I would NEVER recommend a drug or other nutritional treatment based on small, initial research. Can you imagine if your doctor told you to take a drug based on that?

      Now, I wholeheartedly support nutrition over taking medicine when possible. Lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and exercise are supported by a wealth of research. And i do hope that coconut oil is a miracle food that people are claiming it to be. But the first oath that folks need to practice in medicine are to "Do no harm." Instead of stating that the medical community are fools for not recommending it, you should be grateful that we wait for evidence to back up our recommendations.

      Dana, I am not a nurse, and I don't profess to be as smart as you may be when it comes to medical knowledge but I do know (through research)
      that the medical profession do not always prescribe medication that has been totally tested to be 100% safe. I also use coconut oil for many things. I have researched it and from what I've experienced myself, have read, have discussed with others using the product, it seems to be "just what the doctor could have ordered.

  • Since coconut oil has a high fat content, you may increase weight if used in large amounts or that it might increase cholesterol levels. However, these concerns have not been proven in scientific research.

    Coconut oil is safe for pregnant and breast-feeding women only when if it is used in normal amount.

    Coconut oil may increase total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol. But there is contradictory evidence that shows that coconut oil might actually increase levels of “good” cholesterol and have little to no effect on total or “bad” cholesterol levels.

      Virgin doesn't just refer to the first press any more as it once did when people picked olives by hand and used cranks to press the oil from them. In the modern day where huge machines can press massive amounts of oil-bearing fruits and nuts, virgin has taken on new meaning. Virgin refers to the use of pressure without chemicals and heat so it is less processed. There are non-virgin coconut oils out there that do use heat and chemical processes to remove more oil.

  • I work in a hospital and I've checked with physicians, cardiologists, nutritionists and dieticians: There is no medical professional who will state that coconut oil is "good" for you to ingest because it just isn't! Check with any diabetes, heart and stroke, WHO or FDA-none of these miraculous claims for it being "healthy" to consume as a food is true-stop trying to find a magic band-aid for weight loss-especially when it's a "fat".       I am 61 and have been using coconut oil in place of butter for years. All my blood test numbers are fine. In fact, of all my friends in my age range I am the only one not on meds. Of course I also eat a very healthy diet, as I am a vegetarian (sometimes cheat eating seafood) and eat very little processed food (no sugar).

      The link between saturated fats and obesity and cholesterol has begun to dissolve. Saturated fats are a part of a good diet and there are several studies that show coconut oil has had a beneficial effect on cholesterol and weight loss. These are early and there is still much research to be done before we are sure coconut oil is as healthy as many of these claims out there, but not having a ton of research as of yet doesn't completely negate all the anecdotal evidence either. People can still gain weight on a low-fat diet because the refined sugars and carbohydrates we eat are converted into fat and stored, especially when they overrun our system when the liver begins turning them into lipids and the body releases insulin to increase uptake. Our bodies have plenty of uses for the medium chain triglycerides and good saturated fats besides storage. Fat in does not automatically equal fat stored.

      Yes, by all means, when oil pulling never spit into the drain, it will most definitely cause a clog! I like to shave with it too, but use a basin that I toss out . A side note - I was putting a big spoonful inn my coffee every day for about two weeks and noticed a sudden weight gain. I did some research and found that type O blood people WILL gain weight from ingesting CO. Sounds crazy, but the weight came off when I stopped. I still love CO and will continue to use it on my skin, my hair, and my dog. :-)

      Coconut oil goes solid at room temperature. That's pretty normal. If you want it to stay liquid, just keep it in a warmer area or turn down your ac a couple degrees. I actually like it solid in the jar myself though.

  • Sorry to take it to this level, but it did mention lubricant and if I may expound on that for a minute, it may change your life. Freeze coconut oil in a dish, just a quarter inch puddle of it should do. You can break off a piece of it and rub it against your partners skin so the heat of their body will round the sharp edges. Once it's nice and smooth, insert it. The frozen sensation is it's own fun, but then it's melting inside and becoming liquid so dryness is now solved. Before you do that, use other pieces to give a cold-becomes-hot massage. Rub a frozen piece on their back and watch the goosebumps raise. Then it turns to oil for a nice smooth massage while you warm them back up with your hands.

    Get a nice extra sheet to lay down for this.

  • It is important to note everyone that copha is not a healthy product as it has lots of additives in it to keep its shape, consistency and also to stop it going 'stale'. The healthiest coconut oil is unrefined, organic etc. from the health food stores. Remember quality over quantity!

  • May be anecdotal, but works for me!

    Chiggers, fire ants, mosquitoes... sooth the itch and heal any irritation/skin ruptures from scratching with a layer of coconut oil. AMAZING for me on fire ant bites! I blister quickly and in the past have had seed bead sized pustules for days. No more. It is now the only moisturizer I use.

    We keep a jar in the kitchen and in the bathroom.

      I love coconut oil for so many reasons, but I want to share another great way to treat mosquito bites, stings, etc. I make a paste of bentonite clay with water. Apply this topically. It will quickly eliminate itch or help relieve pain. It is also an excellent treatment for boils. Just place a mound of the paste on the freshly cleaned sore, spreading thin the edges so it sticks to the skin and cover with a bandage. It will draw out the puss and cushion and protect as well as heal.

      Good question, Diane. You massage it into the hair and scalp, just enough to wet it all, not enough to make it drip oil everywhere. Comb out the lice and nits with a fine tooth comb and apply more coconut oil. Then you let it sit there for several hours to overnight and rinse it out with your natural shampoo. You can use a shower cap to keep it from making a mess while you wait. Reapply a couple times a week until the nasty things are gone. I wish my mom had know about this one as a kid.

    • I just did this treatment on my daughter, as she kept coming home with lice. I washed her hair with apple cider vinegar and let the vinegar dry in the hair. Then once dried a rubbed coconut oil in her hair. left it in for two hours then got her to rinse it out and shampoo. She hasnt had lice since.. Removed all the dead eggs too as the coconut oil breaks down the glue which helps them to stick to the hair.. I had previously done a lice treatment and days later found dead eggs and more live bugs, which is why i tried this..

  • For topical use, I really love coconut oil, and love this article. But I am concerned about the implication that there is no limit to how much, or how often, coconut oil can be used internally. I am a 7 year low fat raw vegan. While I do love coconuts, and include them in my diet as a whole food, I tend to stay away from consuming the oil by itself, as the combination of large quantities of fruit with oil leads to blood sugar spikes. Perhaps on many medium fat diets, using coconut oil as a replacement for other fat sources can have a positive effect on one's blood sugar. But context is important to note here.       It really is wonderful topically. It is also wonderful internally. I did not mean to imply that there is no limit to how much or how often you can use it though. There are always limits to anything we consume, even the healthy foods. Most people can tolerate a one to three spoonfuls several times a week. I've heard the "never mix carbs and fats" thing before and have never fully agreed with it. There may be some validity to this advice in very large amounts with nothing else, like we find in processed foods. But natural foods automatically minimized the problem with fiber, water content, enzymes, and a host of phytonutrients that nourish and restore. Whole food coconuts are a combination of carbohydrates and fat with protein added in there too. Many other natural foods combine fats and carbohydrates without causing massive sugar spikes or unnecesary fat storage. There is also considerable evidence that coconut oil helps control blood sugar levels even when combined with carbohydrates. So, you are correct in that we shouldn't be drinking coconut oil by the pint, but a couple tablespoons can do a world of good.

  • My cupboard has coconut oil as a constant for cooking and health. A fantastic source for the many, many positive properties of coconut oil is 'Eat Fat Look Thin' by Bruce Fife, N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor).
    He also wrote a book about cooking with coconut flour, which is gluten free, extremely healthy and makes some of the lightest cakes and pancakes you can imagine. His book is the only book I've found on the market that uses only coconut flour in the recipes.

    Thought I'd extend the info a bit too. Coconut oil is:

    1) Hard at 74 degrees F and liquid at 76 degrees F.
    2) A pure saturated fat and is stable (will not go rancid) at room temperature for up to 2 years.
    3) Can be used for 'oil pulling', for healthier gums and teeth (Ayurvedic). First thing in morning, before brushing. Push and pull 1 teaspoon in the mouth between teeth for 10 minutes. Spit into a tissue, NOT down the drain as it will harden and clog the drain. DO NOT Swallow. Rinse . The oil attracts bacteria and other nasty stuff and 'pulls' it from the gums and teeth.
    4) beneficial for weight loss as it stimulates the brown fat in the body which is what triggers a fat burning metabolism.
    5) The brand 'Alpha' has two liquid forms, Supreme MCT Oil, that is 60/40 with Camelina oil I like to use for salads and has no coconut flavour. Also, they have a Gourmet MCT Cocunut Salad Oil product that is also very nice.
    6) 'Unrefined' is the best form as it has not been heated beyond 104F. Any oil you use should be unrefined as this means all the original natural scents, minerals and nutrients from pressing are still available and it is easily identifiable when rancid, unlike refined oils.

  • Don't let the food or pharmaceutical companies get wind of this wonderful product. They will set the FDA after it to regulate it and then attempt to create a synthetic form of it. Do try to find organic, virgin coconut oil to ensure purity. The best way to soften or melt virgin coconut oil is to heat a bowl of water, either in the microwave or in a pot on the stove, then set a second container containing the hardened oil into the warm water, like a double boiler, being careful not to get any water into the oil. The oil will liquify pretty quickly. Mix into your smoothies, or add your favorite essential oils (I prefer doTERRA CPTG Essential OIls) and use the mixture quickly in the liquid form or let cool and harden again to use as a balm or salve. Don't put the oil in the microwave. It will get too hot and the microwaves may alter the oil's beneficial properties.

  • Our products contain a mixture of coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax. It is truly amazing what just a little bit of coconut oil can do for your skin as well as your overall health. Thank you for sharing these great tips!

      Both, Rachel. I've had very good luck with it for athletes foot and ringworm, both fungal infections. Yeast is also a fungus and is should respond just as well. I take a couple tablespoons a day internally and also use it topically. For the ringworm, I added a couple drops of tea tree oil and it cleared up in two days. Just be careful with essential oils around more sensitive areas and stick to just coconut oil in those regions.

    • Yes coconut oil is awesome but I find the best natural deodorant is alum crystal it kills the bacteria on the skin so no odor forms and also great for insect bites and rashes , just wet the stone and rub on dry skin ,it lasts for a long time and is completely natural !       Virgin and extra-virgin are the ones you want to look for. Virgin means that no heat was used in the process, only pressing. Extra virgin is the first pressing and is lower in acidity. Extra-virgin is the healthiest and most flavorful of any oil. Regular may involve heat and other processing methods that can destroy nutrients and alter flavor.

      Hailey, some people dislike the texture and some don't. I don't mind it, but I do get a bit of an itchy, dry throat for a few minutes after I use it. Seems to go away very quickly though and I've been happy with what it's done for my throat and sinuses.

      I just take a couple spoonfuls a day and it helps reduce the inflammation and kill off the bacteria that cause problems. I've heard of people trying to snort it or add it to neti pots. I'm not sure about those ideas. They sound unpleasant to me. I'm content letting it go to work from my blood stream after I've digested it.

    • I just put some coconut oil on my finger tips rub around until melted and then rub the oil in my nostrils, I wake up every day less stuffy. My 9 year old hates to do anything like that and she loves the coconut oil in her nose.

It boosts energy, reduces cravings, helps you feel fuller longer, supports hormones, speeds metabolism, and isn't stored as fat. It doesn't seem to cause weight gain and a few studies suggest it can help shrink waist size, but it isn't certain that it helps us lose weight.       I agree. I always keep mine at room temperature. Coconut oil is a great skin moisturizer. Your body's skin and feet will love it and you'll smell yummy! :-)

      I also sometimes cook with and I have used it as a hair moisturizer for my guy. It's one of the few products that can tame his hair.

      I didn't use it long enough for weight loss to be able to tell if it works, but many swear by it!

      I get heart burn too, mainly when I overeat and get too much simple carbs. I haven't had any problems with coconut oil triggering it. Try a small amount and see how you feel.

This, really, should be the simple rule of thumb for any one just starting out on using Coconut Oil orally - to try a little at a time and see how u feel before increasing to higher quantities, perhaps up to (but not exceeding) two tablespoons per day. Learnt this the hard way, as I started with two tablespoons, which resulted in my having diarrhea (not heartburn). So, I had to take a break of a few days, after which I resumed with one teaspoon per day. Now, I take one tablespoon with my breakfast oatmeal, and it has been a very healthy and happy Coconut Oil Experience for me.

    • Thanks for all the tips on uses for coconut oil. I have used the organic Spectrum brand from Walmart. It has a very mild flavor. I use it for oil pulling. I have been amazed at the results. My teeth are whiter and feel "just from the dentist" clean. It has also greatly helped the white film I have always had on my tongue. I understand that is a yeast issue in my body.     • We Filipinos have been using coconut for many things other than cooking. I remember my dad jarring the oil after my mom frying the shredded coconut meat for making her delicious traditional babinkas and tupigs wrapped in banana leaves. The baby jars stored the coconut oils and my dad used the oil for his thick wavy hair. I grew up using the oil on my skin to this day. and my skin is smooth and wrinkle free.

      Just to add another use for coconut oil which I researched is called "Pulling" and this is from the internet. Take a teaspoon of coconut oil in mouth but instead of swallowing, swish and pull the oil mixing with your saliva. Do chores around the house or whatever you want to do so time will pass and when 20 minute has lapsed, spit the oil and saliva which contains the germs and plaque out into the garbage and not the toilet as recommended. Teeth becomes whiter, germs are removed and gums are healthier! But don't take my word for it and do some research for "pulling". The coconut is the best for many things in my life!

    • Peroxide is actually to harsh for you ear,it is a very strong alkaline (think bleach).
      The best thing for swimmer's ear and infection is rubbing alcohol
      followed by a blow dryer...I have suffered my whole life (I'm 46)
      with ear infections and swimmer's ear, a little alcohol after
      shower or swimming, and have not had a problem in years....
      The alcohol attaches itself to the water molecules, and dehydrates them.
      The heat/air from the blow dryer feels good and take away the
      sting of the alcohol, and speeds up the drying process.
      Then follow with a couple of drops of coconut oil..

    • My vet informed me to NEVER put hydrogen peroxide in a dogs ears because it will destroy their eardrum.

Place a few drops of the ear solution in your dog's ear twice a day for 14 days. Our black lab kept getting ear infections all the time. Sometimes it seemed like no sooner would we get them cleared up and he'd have another one. We found this recipe, mixed it up, and it worked so much better than the prescription we'd been getting from the vet.

  • Coconut oil for aging spots -- I clean my spot with colloidal silver, and once i do that i dab apple cider vinegar on the spot and let it set. Sometime within the half hour I dab coconut oil on the spot and leave it.

    This will reduce the darkness of the spot, appears to reduce the size. I have not done this long enough to know if it will remove the spot entirely -- we will see.

      I love the taste part of it! I can't really describe it, but I love tasting it in my food. And it doesn't taste like coconut in my food, it just tastes like a good oil and seems to freshen or brighten up my food. I'm so addicted to it :)

      Anyone know how long oil lasts? Does it spoil? I keep it out on my counter and usually it stays solid. But we just went through a heat wave and almost every day when I get home the oil is semi or completely liquid. I feel like it may have gone bad for some reason.

      We have been using coconut oil for years....We can determine the weather
      temperature by the thickness of the coconut oil.....If I feel chilly in the morning
      and go to get the coconut oil out, it is kinda hard, if it is real cold, the coconut oil
      is hard. In the hot summertime, the coconut oil is clear and pours. We get a kick
      out of looking to see the consistency, kinda like a weatherman. No, Kristen your

      Most coconut oils do taste to some degree like coconut. This doesn’t have to be a problem for what we’ve used it for. It goes into smoothies without changing the flavor much and can even be used to sauté vegetables or add some healthy fat to soups. The spices and seasonings mask any coconut flavor. We don’t endorse any certain brand but we’ve had good luck with both Ojio and Nature’s Way coconut oils. Both are organic and have a light coconut flavor. Hope that may help you out.

      The reason that coconut oil hardens at room temperature is because it is a highly saturated fat. It is one of three vegetable fats that are saturated. The other 2 are palm and palm kernel oil.

      Kellie, the oil does harden in a smoothie, but the blender typically does a good job of cutting it up into small enough pieces that you don't notice them. Even if the pieces are larger, the oil melts pretty quickly in your mouth, and it's never so hard that it hurts your teeth.:)

      Heat the oil to a liquid state prior to adding it to your smoothie. It will blend much better. If you throw it in your smoothie in it's hardened waxed state, it will be all chunky and no where near as fabulous. Trust me :)

      Do NOT eat spoon fulls of coconut oil please unless you want a heart attack... yes it's a better alternative than other oils especially for cooking due to it's high smoke point and I am in love with it but do not for the sake of your cardiovascular system eat spoon fulls of coconut oil just like that. At the end of the day it's still loaded with saturated fats and will raise your cholesterol levels (the good AND bad ones). Yes some of the saturated fats may be beneficial (i.e. lauric acid) but to a certain extent and limit.

      Mariam, you are relying on the misinformation that has perpetuated about saturated fats for about 50 or 60 years now. Saturated fats can raise cholesterol and so they were maligned as "artery clogging" and fat forming enemies to health that will give us all heart attacks. There a lot of problems with that logic. The fat-free trends of the last 5 decades did not slow down heart disease. Saturated fats tend to raise good cholesterol and often leave bad cholesterol alone, improving the ratio between the two, which is far more important than the total. Cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, but it is only a loose biomarker that may suggest arterial damage, but also may not. Many people with high cholesterol never develop heart disease and many people who do not have high cholesterol still die from heart attacks and stroke. It is refined carbohydrates, trans fats, inactivity, and overeating that really raise cholesterol to dangerous levels, cause obesity, and lead to clogged arteries and free radicals that form when too much glucose flows through our bloodstream with nowhere to go. Of course we do need to be careful with coconut oil and other saturated fats since they are very high in calories, but saturated fats should be a part of a healthy diet. The body uses saturated fats to improve liver health, boost immune function, and create important hormones.

      I am speaking from experience. I started taking coconut oil, 2 tablespoons a day. After 3 months I had another blood test done and my cholesterol levels were better. My bad ones were down and the good ones were up. I also lost weight too! I also use it as lotion for a foot fungus that doctors have not been able to diagnose. It is better than it has been in over 20 years. I also use it instead of butter on toast and it taste great. I will be trying it on my popcorn.       My goodness! Oh, to live in the USA, where there's a choice of ghee! I'm vegan, so it doesn't matter to me, but the choice would be nice to see. And heirloom popcorn?! Most of my friends in England wouldn't even know what "heirloom" means.

      Anyway, my coconut oil recipe uses a refined organic coconut oil, mixed with rapedeed oil (organic). Hey, everything I eat is organic, some soya milk with a drop of cider vinegar to curdle it, and a bit of salt and some turmeric for colour. Whizz everything together and freeze it in small tubs. Hey presto, you've got somethong that looks and tastes just like butter!

      I'm not sure what part of the UK you live in, but here in Manchester we have lots of choices of ghee. We have many middle Eastern and Indian stores that stock it. Also, like people the world over, I buy many organic products online, I also buy my organic coconut oil online, Amazon to be precise, great choices and great prices.

      I don't know anyone who has a garden that doesn't know what heirloom seeds are either. I lived in the States for eleven years and have to say I have pretty much as many choices in everything organic here as I did there. You just mustn't mix with the right people or shop in the right places :)

      You can make Ghee or Clarified/Drawn Butter easily using fresh (unsalted) dairy butter...

      Clarified Butter

      Unsalted butter, cut into cubes
      1. Heat the unsalted butter in a heavy-duty saucepan over very low heat, until it’s melted. Let simmer gently until the foam rises to the top of the melted butter. The butter may splatter a bit, so be careful.

      2. Once the butter stops spluttering, and no more foam seems to be rising to the surface, remove from heat and skim off the foam with a spoon. (It can be saved and added to soups, bread doughs, polenta, pilaf, or a bowl of warm oatmeal.)

      Don’t worry about getting every last bit; you can remove the rest when straining it.

      3. Line a mesh strainer with a few layers of cheesecloth or gauze (in France, I use étamine, which is cotton muslin) and set the strainer over a heatproof container.

      4. Carefully pour the warm butter through the cheesecloth-lined strainer into the container, leaving behind any solids from the bottom of the pan.

      Storage: Clarified butter will keep for 3 to 6 months in the refrigerator. Some say you can leave it at room temperature if the conditions are optimal, but I keep mine under refrigeration. It can also be frozen for a similar length of time.

      Note: If you continue to cook the butter in step #2, it’ll turn a nutty-brown color and take on a pleasant aroma, which the French call beurre noisette, because of the nut-like smell and taste. You can use it right away as is, with or without the foam, and it’s wonderful drizzled over steamed vegetables.

      There is no science behind that claim. HIV is viral meaning that the replication of the virus is based solely on the DNA and RNA or the virus and the host call. There is no substantial evidence to prove that coconut oil helps with decreasing viral loads.

      By the way, Chris Dafoe was not taking any synthetic, federally or scientific methods of prolonging his health since he had used them to reach the viral load he thought was ending his life!! Food for thought, literally!!! Please feel free to check out what led him to leave this country and eat with people of the jungle who had no scientific degrees at all...it is a miraculous story!!! He also helped to improve the health condition of many others, including his partner by sharing his story. May you find peace, belief and faith in reading of his journey!!!

      Actually, you may want to google Chris Dafoe...he thought the end was imminently near,,,his viral load was near 900k and he was deteriorating pretty bad. He ate cooked coconut for 2 months. Unbelievably, he came back to find his status as undetectable with 32 new pounds to boot...it is not an official study...but who needs science to confirm God, Jesus Christ or all important things from a scientific standpoint...life would be sooo sad without faith in an almight power as well as believing people with questionable motives.

      You are correct, kel, but they do share similarities, including their protective sheath. This sheath appears to be vulnerable to lauric and capric acid.
