The Benefits of Morning Water Therapy

Email Print Share

Generally speaking, people rush to drink water when it’s hot out or after we’ve been physically active. Those are good times to drink water, but the best time, and the one most people are missing out on, is in the morning. First thing in the morning, that is, on an empty stomach.

After 10 years of coaching friends, family, and clients about healthy habits and practices, water drinking always finds its way into any good conversation about health. Not only are our bodies comprised of 70% water, but so is the earth and almost every other living thing on earth. They all are 70% water and more. Water is king.

the_benefits_of_water_morning_therapy_picWhat I’m talking about is what is now known as water therapy in some healing circles. Essentially it’s large amounts of water immediately after awaking on an empty stomach. This consists of up to 1.5 liters or so of water upon waking. You should never break a fast with starch or heavy carbohydrates. Liquids are the best way to break a fast, and water in the morning is your best bet to get some real great health benefits!

You have to think of your body while sleeping as being in a state of fasting where it is also repairing itself. An empty stomach allows for more energy to be allocated to the healing and reparation process that your body is going through while sleeping. You don’t ever want to compromise these effects by eating heavy meals before bed nor by eating heavy meals upon waking up.

Water in the morning

  1. Drinking water on an empty stomach in the morning purifies the colon and allows for better absorption of nutrients in your system.
  2. To help with weight loss, drinking at least 16 oz. of water in the morning can boost your metabolism by up to 24%.
  3. Water in the morning hydrates your cells at a superior rate after hours of fasting (sleeping). The rush of hydration to the cells helps in production of blood and muscle cells.
  4. The high dosages of water help to purge the system of toxins through the bowels and will leave you with glowing skin.
  5. It helps to flush and balance your lymphatic system which leads to increased immunity, helping you fight a variety of illnesses.

stay_hydrated_drink_enough_water_for_your_body_imageI’ve had a lot of my coaching clients complain to me about how hard it is for them to drink water upon rising in the morning. For a lot of people, they’ve already established a lifelong habit of eating breakfast first thing in the morning. Creating a new morning ritual of drinking water is one that is healthy and super beneficial to your overall long term health care. It is especially an easy way to detoxify your system without having to make major changes to your lifestyle.

    • Wait till at least 45 minutes before eatting anything. And if possible make another habit, never drink water while eatting heavy meal such as lunch or dinner. Wait till 45 minutes and before that no water at all, but surly can drink any type of juice.

  • Is water therapy good for urinary tract infections.
How much time to take to drink 1.5 litres.
    Please reply.

  • My only question is, where does breakfast fit in? The author doesn't seem to be implying that the morning water is instead of breakfast so where and when would one eat breakfast? He does mention not eating a heavy breakfast but says nothing about what to eat for breakfast.

    • Doug, the Japanese (who have the greatest longevity on Earth) wait 2 hours after waking and drinking their water before breakfast. I started doing this back in April while I was wearing my watchband in the first hole. Today I'm notching my watch in the third hole! I will never stop the water therapy. Plus it's just so gosh darn easy! Good luck, my friend!! :-) :-)

  • Hey, I'm drinking 1.5ltr early in the morning. But I have a problem with it. After drinking water I'm encountering urine problem. For next two half hours I'm using bathroom frequently. Please help me.

  • Hi All,

I am practicing this for more than 2 years. But I don't say it will cure the problem(s) immediately, but I noticed my BP got normal( used to be 160/90) after 1 years and still on diabetic tablet. Hope one day i get cure from that too..

  • I have a serious health issue for over a year now, I take my medications every blessed day & at the end of taking all the medications, tests were carried out but I am still positive. My doctors told me I had to start the treatment all over again with combination of injections, I took the injections for two consecutive months, continue with medications for several months but I see no difference. In fact they had to organise prayer session for me in my church cos a time came I was just in pain, I could not longer eat, was loosing weight seriously & when I look at my self in the mirror I cry cos I was turning into skeleton. I was not seeing myself any more but a shadow of myself is what I was seeing. I read about this Water Therapy in one of d FB pages & I told myself I will commence it, I stopped taking my drugs & commence the therapy & am seeing all round changes now, every body telling me am looking great, I went for my check up & my doctors told me they were happy seeing me good & glowing but I never disclose to them I have stoped my medications its only my mum that is aware that I have stopped, she said I should put my faith in God with the water therapy I have started & am believing God for my total healing. I feel better now, all the internal pain I was having gone, just started less than a month & I can see the changes, I give God the glory.

  • I started the water therapy some months ago the problem i am facing is the loose stool problem immediately after taking the water. Is this how it cleanses one's body.

  • I am not a physician and cannot assure anyone that what has happened for me will happen for them, however, every word I type is true and is recorded by my primary care physician. I began drinking 24-26 ounces of water when I first got up each morning about 5 months ago. I had been on blood pressure, cholesterol (both way to high) as well as metformal for dibetis 2 for several years. Now, under my doctor's care . I no longer take any of those meds and haven't for more than 3 months. I'm now drinking 30 ounces each morning. I drink room temperature water with a shot of lemon for the alkaline. I drink filtered water from the faucet. I AM a believer!

  • Hi All,
I started drinking 500 ml of water in the morining and gradually increased my intake to touch 1.5 litres. But this gave me regular headaches and one evening i threw up 6 times - had to go for a prick to stop the throwing up. Ten I read that the amount of water to be consumed thru out the day depends on one's weight.

your weight in pounds/2 = xx Oz. Convert xx Oz to litres .. that is the amount to be consumed in a day and this also inlcudes all the liquids consumed, not only water. For my weight it is around 2.1 litres

so now i drink 500ml in the morning, 1 litre of water thru the day ..the rest is filled by other liquids. I am feeling better with this quantity.

    Hope this info helps.

  • Do you drink cold or warm water after waking up. Which ones best ??

    • In reply to simon's comment

You drink warm water. This will open the blood vains and thus help boost your digestive system.

If you have any digestive problem. Never eat or drink cold. Always warm.

      In reply to Lisa's comment

Hey Lisa, Best way to see is to lower your intake of water for a few days and see if it gets better. Start low and slowly increase your consumption over several days if you have no symptoms. It doesn't have to be 1.5 liters; even drinking one glass of water in the morning is great for your health. Listen to your body and drink as much as is good for it. And it would probably be best to see your healthcare provider if the symptoms persist.

  • Some habits are easy to start and keep. For some years I wasn't drinking more than two glasses of water per day. I drank water only during mills or while doing some hard work. After I suffered some depressions two years ago, I decided to start drinking water consciously, whether thirsty on not. And it works. I drink water regulary and compulsorily in the morning, upon waking up. I never miss it. Water is nearly my breakfast. I can't say what benefits I already have gotten from this habit. But it makes me feel happy. Water drinking is enjoyable

  • Hi all,

I have been drinking 1.5 L of water for almost 2 years now. Counter to what some websites say- that all your problems will be over within months after following this protocol, I cannot say the same.
I have however, seen clearer skin, and generally a more youthful appearance, but I wanted to see all my aches and pains gone, which I still have.

I am wondering however if these pains are due to acids moving out of the system with the practice of early morning water drinking. If anyone can reply I would greatly appreciate it.
    thank you

  • Why we should take water without brushing. Is there any specific reason.

  • Great article indeed. So the water must be taken on one sitting or what? Some articles suggests that one takes about 640ml of water because 1.5 is too much? Please advise.

  • Pls i need ur answer,i am a Nigerian suffering frm internal stephylococuss for many years now & ve try many hospital without cure.can water therapy cure my infection?

    • Moderator

      In reply to Emmanuel's comment

Emamanuel, Water therapy alone most likely will not cure a staph infection. You would need a systematic approach guided by a physician that most likely includes antibiotics, both prescription and natural. Coconut oil, garlic, honey, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric may be beneficial internally and tea tree oil, coconut oil, lavender oil, oregano oil, and honey may be beneficial externally.

  • after breakfast & lunch & dinner iam drinking the water after an hour but how quantity i should drink

  • I drink one and a half litres of water in the morning at a time. Does it will harm me. How many glasses of water one should drink in a day. Please clarifyt.

Does drinking water in the morning help loosing weight? I don't like loose weight

    • In reply to homa's comment

Hi Homa, I read that you should not eat or drink anything 1 hour before and 1 hour after drinking the water. So drink it on an empty stomach as soon as you wake up, and wait 1 hour before drinking and eating anything else. I hope this helps

  • I started using hot watr bfore i sleep and when i wake up but i utinate a lot. Is there by any chance it will come back to normal or il continue urinating as long as i drink

      In reply to mary's comment

Mary, too much water too fast can lower your blood sodium content, causing headaches and other issues. Cut back a little on the amount you drink and see how you feel.

  • I drink cold water every morning what is the benefit

  • For me it helps to make my rheuma to heal.actualy i am having rheuma for atleast a year and then i go to clinics and they give me medicine, but still i dont feel any changes and the pain still there and that time i must pass my medical exam bec. • In reply to steve's comment

A live testimony, i did start it up Sept 2013 with a wish of losing wt. Well i have not lost any weight but am encouraged by the fact that the fast consumed 1 lit made me wake up light and well. I always had to limb of pain at the lower leg on awakening, am glad coz this one dissappeared stat.

  • Carter,
Have u any thoughts about Penta Water?
It's absolutely amazing for no full feeling. Can't get it here in UK. :-(
And I miss it, specially for morning water drinking.

  • I completely agree with what NurseUK commented. 1.5L of water?!
Granted, drinking water in reasonable amounts is healthy and don't see any harm in drinking it first thing in the morning. However there is no need to force water down someone's throat when they simply don't feel like drinking that much! Moderation and listening to your body is the key.

  • I suffer from Ibs and find it hard to drink so much water, tonight is a bad night for me I look 8months pregnant and feel that I am in labour, this spell will last for several days and the only way this can be cleared in by taking clen prep given to me by my doctor, when feeling this way or the build up to feeling this way its painfull and the pain medication I am given also does not help but there is no other painkiller that helps, I feel like I am in labour a lot of the time and adding water to this can hurt so much, I was told nothing can be done for me.... unless the colon is in danger of a rupture or bursting only then I will get help. Should I take cold or warm water, and will warm water benefit as much as cold.
    Thankyou for your time.

  • Drinking water can increase your metabolism by 24%? That's a pretty significant claim. Do you have evidence to support this?

  • Hi,

I wake up at 7am and drink 500ml-1L. I then have a green smoothie between 9-10am, a snack after that then lunch at 1-2pm. My problem is I feel I am drinking too much water as I usually have 3-4L a day (without a heavy workout). Is there wrong times to drink and should/how do I reduce my water intake, as I currently just drink when I feel thirsty.

  • Great article! I agree completely with pumping more fluids into your body. I'm curious what research studies you are basing your recommendations on? Specifically, the five points made towards the end of your article. Thanks! :)

  • Advising people to drink 1.5 liters of water in one sitting is very unsafe. Electrolyte imbalances occur very quickly and can cause serious damage including death. Potassium, sodium and magnesium need to be kept in a perfect balance, large amounts of H20 consumed very quickly can cause an imbalance in these electrolytes causing dangerous cardiac rhythms. Even a hospital wouldn't administer 1.5 liters of fluid unless in a medical emergency and with blood chemistry monitoring.

  • Hi after drinking that much water woul it still b ok to drink a few cups of coffee in the morning??

  • Heidi,

Whenever I increase my water intake back up to what I feel it should be, I always urinate a LOT the first several days, but, if I keep it up, I wind back down. I feel my body is reacting something like this "OH finally some water, now I can flush out all these toxins" and so I have to urinate constantly because my body is cleaning house, and I actually end up feeling even MORE thirsty, but as this effect wears off, I find myself in a happy balance. Urinating any more frequently than every 3 hours is considered frequent urination in the medical world. I personally have myself on somewhat of a routine.

    • In reply to Nancy's comment

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try increasing my first drink of water in the morning, as its the weekend I will feel more comfortable. I hope my body gets used to it quickly but I just will persist for the next two weeks and see. Thanks.

  • Hey! First of all, I'd just like to say that I really enjoy reading your articles.
I have been in the habit (for many years) of drinking just plain room temperature water upon awakening. Then, I drink some freshly squeezed lemon in warm water once I'm up and about - I love it.
My question to you is: in your professional opinion, how long should one wait before actually eating something once consumied all of the water or freshly squeezed lemon?

Thank you, and keep up the great articles.

    Róisín, Ireland.

    • In reply to Róisín's comment

Water actually is processed through the body's system in as little as 40 seconds! Drinking 1.5 liters of water tends to give a full feeling, but what you consume next is important. Generally speaking, I'm doing smoothies or fruit in about an hr, but nothing big till lunch. This way forces you to create systems, where you look fwd to your biggest meal (lunch). So its ok to snack till then.

  • I find it hard to drink water in the morning because of the increased need to urinate shortly afterwards. I work as a teacher and cannot take time out of lesson to go to the bathroom. Does your system ever get used to having more liquids and stop this urgent need to urinate as much? I would like to drink more water but this effect is so problematic.

    • In reply to Heidi's comment

Hi! Your system does eventually get used to the additional liquids. The better the quality of water, the less you urinate. High quality water is more absorbable on the molecular level, needing less filtration by the kidneys. Get up 30mins earlier & hug down the best water you can find @ room temp. You don't have to continue drinking a liter per serving for the remainder of the day

    • Thanks. I will get myself a filter as my tap water doesn't taste too good. It might make it a nicer experience too as well as having more health benefits. I appreciate the advice. Thanks

    • In reply to Heidi's comment

I had the same problem (urinate) before; but after 1hr u gonna feel better and urinate normally

  • Question - I drink 1 liter of warm/hot water in the morning with lemon. Should it be cold water? I heard you can benefit from warm water more. Thanks!
