Healthy Green Smoothie for Mom and Growing Baby

Growing a baby is a lot of work! Thank goodness we've got Shandi Finnessey to walk us through eating right and staying fit with this smoothie for mom and growing baby!

I have always loved making smoothies and eating healthy. But now that I am five months pregnant with my first child, I want more goodness for my body and growing baby! I love to research what is good for certain months of pregnancy and strive to get a wide range of vitamins and nutrients in every day.

That all being said, expectant moms get all sorts of cravings! And although it is nice to give in to those cravings from time to time, it’s best to start your day on a healthy note. So, no matter how you finish the day (my personal favorite is scooping almond butter out of the container with chunks of dark chocolate and placing them directly into my mouth!), you know you got the nutrients you and your baby needed for the day!

Also, the way I see it, if you are consuming fresh, live, wholesome and organic foods, a little slip-up here and there is handled easier by your body! You have a fine oiled machine that can process junk that may be consumed later in the day. So I make sure I start my day right and get in a good portion of fresh fruits, veggies, vitamins and minerals first thing in the morning. That way, if my day ends with a few yummy finger foods, I don’t feel as awful as I would have otherwise!

So, how do I make sure to get all those vitamin and enzyme rich foods in? It’s easy! I just make my Green Goddess Smoothie! It looks like a lot of ingredients, but you can add or take out whatever your craving-fits desire. And with the ease of the blender, the smoothie is ready to drink in less than 5 minutes! Are you ready for this powerhouse packed green drink? Here it goes…


Green Goddess Smoothie

  • 1 whole banana
  • 2 cups kale
  • 4-5 stalks celery
  • ½ cup blueberries (or you can substitute with half a green apple)
  • 2 tablespoons flax oil
  • 1–2 teaspoons kelp powder
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 scoop Sunwarrior Classic Plus vanilla protein
  • ½–1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 8–12 ounces distilled water


Blend until smooth and creamy and ready to drink and voila! That’s your first meal of the day, packed with all the goodness you need to keep your energy up and keep your baby happy and growing!

Why the ingredients are good for you

Banana: too many people are walking around deficient in potassium and don’t even know it! If you first peel the banana and stick it in a ziplock in the freezer it’ll almost become like ice cream in the blender! Delish!!

Kale: excellent source of antioxidant vitamins A, C and K. Throw in as much as you’d like, but at least 2 cups worth. I substitute kale with whatever greens I have on hand. Usually end up using spinach.

Celery: this has boat loads of fiber to fill you up and keep you energized!

Fruit: adding half a cup of frozen blueberries or half a green apple will sweeten your smoothie and provide extra vitamins! I keep my freezer full of frozen berries. They are cheaper to buy and last forever, so they’re always on hand to toss into my smoothies!

Flax Oil: I can’t stress to you how important healthy oils are for you and your baby! They improve your cardiovascular system which is just what a brand new system needs!

Kelp Powder: Your growing baby needs iodine and this is an excellent source! I find it’s difficult to consume a lot of sea vegetables, but they are so, so good for you! This is a simple way to be sure you are getting some in your diet every morning!

Nutritional Yeast: Every expecting mom who has ever found herself exhausted mid-day for no reason, raise your hand... Yep. Just as I imagined. Heck, we are growing body parts, people! Of course we are tired!! Well then, you’ll soon find that nutritional yeast is one of the easiest ways to put a pep back in your step. Loaded with B-vitamins, nutritional yeast gives you the sustained energy that you need while growing your precious little one.

Chia Seeds: these little guys pack a lot of punch (especially for those vegans who need more plant based proteins)!

Plant Based Protein Powder: I love Sunwarrior Warrior Blend with the vanilla flavoring! Stay as far away from whey and soy protein as you can! Plant based protein is now your new best friend. Easier to digest for you and baby!

Cinnamon: This spice has far too many health benefits to list here. If you’re bored, google it. See for yourself. You’ll be amazed at it’s powers! Add about a teaspoon (more or less for taste)

Distilled Water: Use more or less of this depending on how thick you like your smoothie. Do not… I repeat… DO NOT use tap water for any reason (unless it first went through a filter of some sort). Don’t get me started on all the crap the water treatment plants put into our systems! You can use spring water or even apple juice or coconut water, if you want more flavor to your smoothie!

If you are ambitious, feel free to add more to the smoothie! I sometimes put in barley grass powder, psyllium seed husks (talk about FIBER!), vitamin C crystals, a green powder, raw cacao powder, liquid chlorophyll and aloe juice.
