How to get stronger and back on your feet after a baby with yoga and massage.
A lot of people have asked me what I did to get back in shape so quickly after giving birth, to get back to my pre-baby body, but to be honest, it didn’t feel that quick. In fact, the first few months after childbirth I got even bigger because I needed to lay low while I recovered. That meant I couldn’t exercise at all. I didn't actually leave my apartment for the first week, and the only reason I left at all was because I had an important meeting that I couldn’t miss. And then I was back in bed for another whole week.
What really got me up-and-running again was that we had to travel when Troy was three and a half weeks old, so that kind of forced me to start walking. This was my simple foray back to health.
Before my trip I also was lucky enough to have my dear friend and incredible yoga teacher, Janet Wallden, for private lessons. She met me where I was at and catered to where my body was physically.
At first it was just a very slow Hatha and light stretching with lots of hands on massage and assistance. I was so sore I cried during those first few classes. As I got stronger, we transitioned into more Pilates infused postures and exercises to help strengthen my core.
I want to stress how important it is to follow your instincts, and that every woman is different. For me it wasn’t right to start doing cardio and hitting the gym. I had a lot of people suggesting it to me—they were trying to give me support, but it felt more like being pressured. In the end, I feel great about how I listened to what my body needed, and this slow return to fitness gave me the best foundation I could have asked for.
Don’t question yourself, mommies! Listen to that instinct.
Here’s a message from Janet Wallden that may help you get an idea of what you need to do:
“I've had the pleasure of being a friend & yoga teacher to Sarah for over 13 years! As soon as she could get back on the mat after giving birth to her son, she did, as enthusiastically and energetically as her spirit has always been.
Though often sleep deprived and a little delirious from the joy & challenges of a newborn, she maintained her focus with clear intentions....to regain her former strength and shape.
We added specific openers for her shoulders, back & core, to maintain the stamina needed to keep up with a growing baby. She'll need it as he's a very healthy & happy boy!
For me a women's body is amazing, and nobody knows it better than a woman who has brought a new life into the world.
Sarah is glowing both inside & out!!”
Good luck to everyone on their journey! I’m here to support you along the way if you have any questions.
Xo,
Sarah
