3 Obscure Ways to Use Activated Charcoal for Your Body

Activated charcoal has so many beneficial uses, some more known than others. Check out the three uses you might not have heard about before!

As health-conscious, natural-living sun warriors, many of us probably use activated charcoal in our beauty routines in a number of awesomely effective ways: teeth whitener, detoxifier, face mask, but the natural powerhouse has many other, more obscure, uses as a beauty product.

Today I am sharing three of my favorite, lesser known ways to incorporate activated charcoal into your beauty routine.

How is Activated Charcoal Made?

In case you’re not familiar, activated charcoal is a naturally occurring compound that is made by heating regular charcoal in the presence of gas to around 600–900C. The heating process creates tiny pores in the charcoal. These pores act as powerful binding agents that can adsorb many different compounds.

Adsorbing is different than absorbing. Adsorbing means that the compound collects other compounds on its surface. Absorbing means the compound takes the compounds in; our bodies absorb nutrients while activated charcoal adsorbs toxins and poisons.

Topical Remedies for Bites and Stings

Because activated charcoal is such a powerful absorber, it’s a wonderfully effective natural option for relief from insect bites and stings. Putting activated charcoal on top of a mosquito bite will help pull the poisons out of the area, relieving itching and redness.
