Calming and Healing Benefits of Supported Shoulder Stand
by Zain Saraswati Jamal March 10, 2014
Zain Saraswati Jamal, mind, spirit, and body coach, peacefully walks us through the Salamba Sarvangasana, or supported shoulder stand. This pose is the Mother or Queen of all asanas as a complete pose that brings happiness, calm, and nourishment to the body. It opens the throat chakra (Vishuddha), strengthens and stimulates the thyroid gland, prostrate, and abdominal organs, improves digestion, reduces fatigue, relieves stress, and even calms the symptoms of menopause.
The shoulder stand also tones the legs, glutes, and abs, but this inverted pose is for intermediate to advanced practitioners only. Beginners should not attempt this pose without the guidance of a teacher who can support them and make sure they are safe. It also isn’t for anyone pregnant, menstruating, or with back or neck issues. Follow Zain carefully and make sure you are really comfortable with this healing pose. Namaste.
