Vegans in Power

The face of veganism is changing as famous and powerful individuals join the ranks. The old idea that vegans were all long-haired hippies, nibbling their carrots and lettuce in their secluded mountain homes, no longer applies. We’re now joined by popular musicians, award-winning actors, competitive body-builders, and successful business moguls. Even several politicians are going vegan.

Reasons Behind Choosing a Vegan Lifestyle

There are many reasons people choose a vegan lifestyle—health, status, personal morality, religion, and even for love—but the results are the reason they continue down the path. Bill Clinton, who recently decided to join the vegan revolution, told Wolf Blitzer this past September, "I got back to basically what I weighed in high school."

Vegan Athletes: Breaking the Stigma

He’s not alone. Body-builders are shucking off the stigma that only competitors who consume animal products will have the muscle mass to be viable challengers. Bill Pearl and Billy Simmonds have shown the world that this isn’t true. Bob Harper, a personal trainer made famous on The Biggest Loser, is further proof that vegans can be active, strong, and vital. Even Mike Tyson, known for biting ears, astonished the world by giving up animal products. He lost 130 pounds and mentioned in an interview with Van Susteren, “I feel awesome,” when asked about his vegan living and his earlier bouts with arthritis.

Veganism in Music and Hollywood

Vegan musicians are everywhere. Carrie Underwood, Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars along with the rest of the band, and Bryan Adams are just a few who uplift us, fill us with emotion, drive our productivity, or entertain us with their music. Vegan actors are also becoming commonplace. Alec Baldwin, Lea Michele, Emily Deschanel, James Cromwell, Woody Harrelson, and Casey Affleck come to mind. These musicians and actors inspire us to seek healthier living without being pushy with their ideals.

Vegan Business Leaders: Setting an Example

Business moguls are some of the newest additions to the vegan lifestyle. Many are stepping forward, taking control of their diet, and setting a strong example for their employees, their shareholders, and the world. They prove big business doesn’t have to be unhealthy. Russell Simmons, Steve Wynn, Bill Ford, Biz Stone, and John Mackey have all declared themselves vegan, but there are many more.

The Positive Shift in Veganism's Image

These changes to the vegan image, and the buzz created by high-profile people coming forward to embrace a wholesome alternative, make this an interesting time to be pursuing a healthier diet. The old stigmas are fading away, and new research is continually building up the benefits of eating more plant-based foods, extending life, lowering cholesterol, fighting cardiovascular disease, and much more.

Considering Veganism: A Step Towards Health

If you’re inspired to be healthier, go for it. Not ready to go vegan? That’s up to you, but adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet will make a huge difference. Watch how you feel and see where it takes you from there.
