Start the day off right by waking up to breakfast already done! These apple and steel cut oats taste like happiness, and the crock pot does all the work!
Hot cereal is delicious on a cold morning. It warms your insides, making the outside cold something pleasant. But making steel cut oats in the morning for your kids before they go to school is sometimes not possible. And eating just a plain bowl of quick oats gets a little boring for everyone. Sure, you can mix it up a bit, but it still takes time that might be better spent elsewhere. This is where crockpot oats comes in!
You can mix these delicious steel cut oats the night before, and it’ll be hot when you get up. It will only take a few minutes. You can cook this in a smaller crockpot (3 or 4 quarts) or if you have a larger one, just mix the ingredients in a bowl that will fit in your crockpot and add water up ¾ of the way up the bowl. I find that cooking the oats in the bowl actually makes the oats not cook so fast and so you can cook the oats all night long.
This is also an excellent way to use up old apples that aren’t bad but don’t really look good. Just chop them up and add them in.
What isn’t there to love about apples and cinnamon? Apples give you much-needed fiber and vitamin C to help fight off colds. The cinnamon is also a delicious antioxidant just like the apples. I can’t think of a better way to start your day than with a delicious bowl of hot cereal!
